The Oculus Rift Is Here! Are You Ready?
Today it begins… As of this moment forward the world will never be the same. With the release of the Oculus Rift, information, entertainment, and human experiences as a whole are bound to evolve in ways that we never could’ve imagined before.
I can still remember watching ‘The Jetsons’ and imagining how cool it would be to have a video phone conversation with someone in a different place. Anyone who has used Skype knows that this happened long ago. When I was just about eight years old I saw ‘Toy Story’ and I recall asking my Dad how they made this movie!? He told me that there was a camera inside the computer that they could move anywhere that they wanted to. This made my head spin because I instantly imagined what it would be like if I was the camera inside the computer.. this would mean that I could walk around and see things from different perspectives, even see things that weren’t meant to be seen!
This is just a small representation of what VR allows us to do within a 3D world. Walk around your favorite animated movies, hang out with fictional characters, it’s not just games that become something special, but all forms of media can be enhanced when viewed in a VR HMD.
- Uninstall any and all Oculus software prior to 1.3
- Make sure your video card is up-to-date
- Make sure you have the proper USB capabilities/newest drivers
- Install 1.3 Runtime – This will update drivers and firmware
- Create a profile/Log in to Oculus
- Run the device setup for the first time
- Play games with the VRSPIES!
Need Help Removing Oculus Software?
Here is a brief video that describes some of the methods that can be used to rid your PC of those pesky old Oculus files.
**Addition – Previous demos and games that were available for the DK2 and 0.8 runtime will NOT work on the newer runtime until the developers integrate the newer Oculus 1.3 software into their projects.
Henry:
Lost:
As you can tell these experiences had a way of pulling me into the story. Within each of them I felt a sense of presence and extremely smooth tracking even though I was still just using the DK2. While watching Henry I felt I could walk around his house with him, and I wanted to! The atmosphere is amazing and reminds me of being a kid again. During Lost I genuinely felt like this giant hand was staring me down, and for a moment I was ready to leap out of the way in case he wanted to crush me. I can’t wait for more!
As always I am very interested in what you guys think about these experiences as well. Feel free to comment or email me at realitycheckvr@vrspies.com.

The Rift is here and Vive lands in a week – exciting times for sure 🙂
Super Excited! Hopefully someone close to me gets a Vive so I can compare for myself!)
Good article. You should probably mention in this article that most/all 0.8 content will no longer function, for now at least.
I tested Titans of Space, World Axis, Battle for Endor, Keep Talking, and many others. None work at all.
Better hang on to that dual boot machine so you can still enjoy all the VR content you've gathered for the last few years.
Good point! I've written in a short addition to the article, thanks a lot!)
Currently 0.8 Runtime Demos will need to be updated by their developers. As you said, I will be booting to my small HD anytime I want to play the newer demos for the time being.
Hopefully several of our KS/MO VRheads will be getting Vive's so we can try them out!
I'm really not to worried about roomscale, as I've had my DK2 set up to walk around with it for quite some time. The fact of the matter is, if you game for hours, you will want to sit, most of the time probably.
I do like to walk in VR, but given only a few steps in any direction, you still use controller to move, then you mostly lean and peer around. That is until you are required to 'hit the deck' to avoid bullets or the like 😉
